In terms of major equipment manufacturing, the reporter found that Guangdong currently holds a significant position in the domestic market, with substantial market capacity and certain technological advantages. However, there are still common challenges across the country. Taking the auto parts industry as an example, Li Cixun, chairman of the Guangdong Automobile Industry Association, told reporters, "Our main issue is the lack of core technology, and what we have is still dependent on others. This is the key challenge for the auto industry in Guangdong, and even for China as a whole."
Independent development should not just focus on the vehicle itself. Although there are rumors that Guangzhou Automobile Group will make progress in its own brand cars in the coming years, Lu Zhifeng, the group’s general manager, emphasized to reporters that innovation and independent development should not only target the entire vehicle but also extend to parts and components. He pointed out that achieving independent development in spare parts plays a crucial role in advancing the overall self-reliance of the automotive industry.
It is reported that there are nearly 400 major auto parts manufacturers in Guangdong. However, Luo Jiansheng, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Economic and Trade Commission, believes that the autonomous development capability of the auto parts industry remains relatively weak. Many auto manufacturers rely on products with low technological content, while key technical components are either non-existent or fully foreign-owned. Li Cixun also noted that some local governments fail to conduct proper research before investing, leading to repeated investments and overlooking long-term business risks. Such practices come at a heavy cost. Moreover, many of these enterprises are labor-intensive and low-tech, with numerous companies producing items like tires, glass, and tape recorders, but few capable of manufacturing advanced systems such as ABS or EFI. These are precisely where innovation is most needed.
Some experts suggest that in the development of auto parts and components, it is essential first to absorb advanced technologies from other countries before developing indigenous products. This approach can help build a stronger foundation for future innovation.
Experts also agree that Guangdong now has a considerable market capacity to support self-innovation. With the presence of three major Japanese automakers in Guangzhou and Shenzhen BYD Auto starting operations, hundreds of auto parts companies have established themselves in the region. Areas like Guangzhou and Foshan have formed large-scale auto parts industry clusters, creating a favorable environment for independent innovation.
From the perspective of vehicle manufacturing, the automotive industry led by Guangzhou has shown strong growth this year. From January to August, Guangzhou produced a total of 250,000 vehicles, representing a 50.43% increase compared to the same period last year—50 percentage points higher than the national average. In 2004, national car production increased by 11.5%, rising to 13.74% this year, ranking second nationally, just behind Shanghai. This year, Guangzhou's car production surpassed that of Jilin Province. Over recent years, Guangdong's automobile industry, led by Guangzhou, has seen output and output value grow by approximately 50%, making it the fastest-growing and most attractive sector among the nine major industrial industries in Guangdong.
This robust growth provides a vast market space for the independent development of auto parts and components. Experts suggest that if Guangdong enterprises can achieve breakthroughs in key auto parts, they may have the opportunity to integrate into the procurement networks of both the national and global automotive industries.
