Shuigang Steelmaking Plant successfully developed alloy welding wire steel

From July 4th to 5th, under the guidance of the company's technical department, Shuigang Steelmaking Plant successfully developed two high-performance steel grades—ER70S-6 and 65Mn—in the steelmaking industry. A total of three heats of ER70S-6 were produced, amounting to 83.49 tons, while five heats of 65Mn were made, with four of them meeting quality standards, totaling 116 tons. After thorough testing, the trial production results met all required specifications. ER70S-6 is an alloyed wire steel commonly used in gas shielded arc welding. This welding method uses a protective gas to shield the welding area from atmospheric contamination, ensuring a clean and strong weld. Gas shielded welding is widely adopted in heavy machinery, construction equipment, shipbuilding, boiler manufacturing, and automotive industries due to its efficiency, energy savings, and high-quality output. With the rapid development of this technique in China, the demand for welding wire rods has surged. ER70S-6 is a standard wire grade used internationally, following the American Welding Society (AWS) standard AWS A5.18. It offers excellent arc stability and superior weld bead appearance, making it a popular choice abroad. 65Mn is a high-carbon low-alloy steel known for its strength and toughness. It is primarily used in the production of spring wires, shock absorber springs for vehicles, mechanical springs, and wire ropes. The material is highly valued for its durability and performance, making it a premium product with significant market demand. Traditionally, most of this type of steel was produced using electric furnace technology. The Shuigang Steelmaking Plant meticulously planned and prepared for the production of both steel grades. Each heat was cast using a dedicated tundish to ensure consistency and quality throughout the process. The successful development of ER70S-6 and 65Mn marks a major milestone for the company, expanding its portfolio of high-value-added products and opening up new market opportunities. This achievement not only enhances the competitiveness of the company’s offerings but also strengthens its position in the evolving steel industry.
