Jinchuan develops large sulfur dioxide converter

Recently, the Jinchuan Group has successfully installed world-scale SO₂ converters, which incorporate a number of utility model patents developed independently by the company. These advanced systems are part of the key construction projects under the 700,000-ton-per-year sulfuric acid project. The sulfur dioxide converter serves as a critical subproject, supporting the company’s new nickel smelting system and functioning as a flue gas treatment and environmental protection facility. It is one of the core components of the smelter's flue gas acid production system. Located at the heart of the system, the converter has a cylindrical structure, standing 22 meters tall with a diameter of 15 meters. It can process up to 280,000 standard cubic meters of flue gas per hour, making it the largest in both size and capacity globally. This achievement highlights Jinchuan's technological leadership in the field of sulfuric acid production. In terms of design and installation, Jinchuan drew upon the operational experience from previous systems, such as the 530,000-ton-per-year and 300,000-ton-per-year sulfuric acid plants. By modifying the original single-layer gas outlet to a multi-level variable outlet, the system ensures even gas distribution throughout the converter. This innovation has been fully integrated into the design of the 700,000-ton-per-year sulfuric acid converter. Moreover, all equipment is constructed using stainless steel materials with high thermal stability. This choice significantly reduces overall thermal deformation and prevents stress concentration during normal operations, enhancing the equipment’s durability and reliability. Another notable innovation lies in the sliding bearing technology. A diamond-shaped graphite slider is embedded on the sliding surface of the bearing, tailored to the thermal stress characteristics and sliding direction of the converter. This design ensures uniform frictional resistance across the radial direction, eliminating potential lubrication dead zones and improving the converter’s operational safety. These two groundbreaking technologies have been patented at the national level, reflecting Jinchuan Group’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development in the industrial sector.
