Researchers say analyzing the tumor's DNA may help explain the underlying causes of other cancers. This analysis shows a direct link between the number of smokers in a lifetime and the number of tumor DNA mutations. 
Sir Michael Stratton, a professor at the Wellingham Trust Sanger Institute, said: "The odds of multiple gene mutations are higher. We call this a key cancer gene, which turns normal cells into cancer cells.
