The WMI identifies the country and manufacturer, while the VDS provides details about the vehicle's features, and the VIS includes specific information such as the model year and assembly plant. Each character in the VIN has a specific meaning, though the exact interpretation may vary slightly between countries and manufacturers.
For example, in Ford vehicles, the first digit represents the country of origin, the second the manufacturer or region, and the third the model category. In BMW, the first digit indicates the country, the second the manufacturer, and the third the model and category. Mercedes-Benz uses the first digit for the country, the next two for the manufacturer, and the fourth for the body and chassis series. Toyota's VIN structure also varies slightly, with the first digit indicating the country, the second the manufacturer, and the third the model class.
In addition to these examples, the 10th character of the VIN typically represents the model year. For instance, A stands for 1980, B for 1981, and so on, up to Y for 2000. This system allows for easy identification of when a vehicle was manufactured, which is crucial for buyers, dealers, and service providers.
