Agilent Technologies has recently launched its next-generation Agilent 5975 GC/MS, a significant upgrade from the previous 5973 model. This new system introduces a modernized user interface that allows for seamless electronic sharing of application methods. This innovation eliminates the need for operators to manually recreate methods when switching instruments, significantly accelerating method transfer and standardization across laboratories.
Chris Toney, General Manager of GC/MS at Agilent’s Chemical Analysis Division, highlighted several key improvements in the 5975. The inert mass selective detector features a redesigned hyperbolic mass analyzer, which expands the mass range and enhances sensitivity. Additionally, the vacuum system has been completely overhauled, improving the efficiency of pumping gases like hydrogen and helium—critical for maintaining optimal performance during analysis.
The flow control system in the 5975 automatically adjusts reagent gas flow and ion source conditions, ensuring consistent and reliable results. On the ion source side, the chemical ionization (CI) source is now a standard option, similar to the traditional electron impact (EI) source, offering greater flexibility for different analytical needs.
Another notable feature is the introduction of a new data acquisition mode. Users can now simultaneously collect selected ion scan (SIS) and full scan data without compromising sensitivity. When paired with Agilent’s Deconvolution Reporting software and its comprehensive library, this technology greatly improves the identification of unknown compounds, making it easier for scientists to analyze complex samples with confidence.
