Recently, the Jinchuan Group has successfully installed world-scale SOâ‚‚ converters, which are equipped with several utility model patents developed independently by the company. This marks a significant technological milestone in the field of sulfuric acid production and environmental protection.
As a key subproject of Jinchuan Group's 700,000-ton-per-year sulfuric acid project, the sulfur dioxide converter plays a crucial role in flue gas treatment and environmental protection. It is an essential part of the new nickel smelting system, designed to support efficient and eco-friendly operations. The converter serves as a core component of the smelter’s flue gas acid production system, located at the heart of the process. Its cylindrical structure stands 22 meters tall and has a diameter of 15 meters, making it one of the largest and most advanced units of its kind globally. The equipment can process up to 280,000 standard cubic meters of flue gas per hour, setting a new benchmark in performance and scale.
In terms of design and installation, Jinchuan drew on the operational experience from previous systems with capacities of 530,000 tons/year and 300,000 tons/year. By modifying the original single-layer gas outlet into a multi-level variable joint system, they ensured more uniform gas distribution across the entire unit. This innovation was fully integrated into the design of the 700,000-ton/year sulfuric acid converter, enhancing efficiency and reliability. Moreover, all components are made from stainless steel with high thermal resistance, reducing overall thermal deformation and minimizing stress concentration during normal operation.
Another notable innovation is the advanced sliding bearing technology used in the converter. This design incorporates diamond-shaped graphite sliders on the bearing surface, tailored to the thermal stress characteristics and sliding direction of the converter. This unique approach ensures that the frictional force remains consistent across the radial direction, preventing any lubrication dead zones and significantly improving the safety and stability of the converter during operation.
These two groundbreaking technologies have been patented at the national level, reflecting Jinchuan Group’s commitment to innovation and sustainable development in the industrial sector.
