TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 1. SCOPE This specification covers the design and construction of Tension Clamps to be used for the termination of aluminum conductors at terminal poles and section poles. The clamps are suitable for use in tropical zones with a maximum ambient temperature of approximately 40°C and a mean annual temperature of about 28°C, under conditions of high humidity and heavy rainfall. 2. STANDARD This specification references and complies with the following standards: BS 3288:1973 – Insulator and Conductor Fittings for Overhead Power Lines BS 729 – Hot Dip Galvanized 3. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM The clamps are designed for use on a 3-phase, 3-wire, 33/22/11/6.6 kV, 50 Hz primary distribution system, with the star-point of the source-end transformer earthed through an Earthing Resistor. 4. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION The clamps are manufactured from materials that do not cause chemical corrosion when in constant contact with aluminum conductors. They have a tensile strength that is not less than the breaking strength of the conductors they are intended to connect. The design ensures that no unnecessary strain or abrasion is applied to the conductor surface. 5. SIZE OF CLAMPS The clamps are designed to accommodate the following sizes of aluminum conductors: a. 50 mm² Aluminum Conductor b. 100 - 150 mm² Aluminum Conductor 6. MARKINGS Tension clamps will be permanently marked as per customer requirements. 7. INSPECTION AND TESTS For evaluation purposes, we will provide the following to our customers: a. A sample of the tension clamp complete with all accessories b. A copy of the test report conducted in accordance with BS 3288 and BS 729 Material grade: 300W steel to SANS 143 Finish: Hot dip galvanized Threads: Cut before galvanizing Supplied complete with one hex nut and one round flat washer Thread pitch: 2.0 (before galvanizing) Washer outer diameter: 29.2–30.0 mm Bolt hole: 18.0–18.5 mm Thickness: 2.4–3.6 mm Materials Specification: SANS 1431 Corrosion Specification: ISO 1461
