The Dual Orifice Air Relief Valve is designed to efficiently release large volumes of air during pipeline filling and allow significant air intake when the system is draining. It also effectively removes air bubbles that may form under dynamic fluid conditions. This valve provides essential protection against self-locking by ensuring continuous air relief. These air vents are widely used in hydronic heating systems, water service lines, storage tanks, centrifugal pumps, gas lines, and solvent filters. The automatic operation and simple design ensure trouble-free performance with minimal maintenance.
Air vent valves are crucial in maintaining pressure balance within a tank while preventing fluid spillage through vent lines. They allow the free flow of air or fluid in and out until they close, typically activated by a float mechanism. During refueling, the incoming fuel displaces air inside the tank, which the vent valve allows to escape through a designated path. Once the tank is full, the float valve closes, preventing fuel from leaking. These valves also permit air to re-enter the tank as fuel is consumed, preventing dangerous negative pressure and potential fuel starvation. Additionally, they protect the tank from pressure damage caused by fuel expansion and contraction due to temperature changes. Some models even include features to prevent fuel from escaping when the aircraft is inverted.
Why remove air from a water system?
Every building services engineer understands that trapped air in hot or chilled water systems can lead to various issues such as noise, corrosion, and increased maintenance costs. Air can cause air locks, which hinder system filling or pump priming. It can also affect the accuracy of flow meters and regulating valves. In extreme cases, it might even temporarily shut down equipment. Air and other non-condensable gases significantly reduce heat transfer efficiency. Air Valves vs. Hydrants
A common misconception is that fire hydrants can be used instead of combination air valves for air release. This is strongly discouraged for several reasons. Fire hydrants require active user intervention, leading to hidden maintenance costs. To function properly, they need to be discharged daily, which can result in high labor costs. Manual air release cannot handle flow surges or sudden demand, whereas automatic air valves provide on-demand protection for the water system.
Hydrants are not effective at breaking vacuum during negative-pressure events, which can lead to contamination. Automatic air valves offer continuous protection without user involvement. Moreover, pressures inside hydrants can be hazardous, reaching up to ten times the system's rated pressure. Automatic valves eliminate this risk by operating without human intervention.
Hydrants are usually mounted on the sides of main pipes, reducing their effectiveness as air-release devices. In contrast, automatic air valves are installed at the top (12 o'clock position), ensuring complete air discharge.
