**Product Description:**
Duplex 2205 (UNS S31803) is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel designed to address common corrosion issues typically found in 300-series stainless steels. The term "duplex" refers to a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic like 304 nor purely ferritic like 430. Instead, the structure of 2205 consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In its annealed state, 2205 contains approximately 40–50% ferrite. Often called the "workhorse grade," 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex stainless steel family.
The key advantage of a duplex structure is that it combines the beneficial properties of both ferritic and austenitic alloys—such as high strength and resistance to stress corrosion cracking with ease of fabrication and corrosion resistance. However, it’s important to note that 2205 should be used at temperatures below 600°F, as prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can lead to embrittlement.
This material offers a cost-effective solution for applications where 300-series stainless steels are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. Stress corrosion cracking occurs when stainless steels are exposed to tensile stress while in contact with chloride-containing solutions. Higher temperatures increase this susceptibility. The combination of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in 2205 provides excellent resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion, making it ideal for marine environments, brackish water systems, bleaching operations, and some food processing applications.
