An article published on CBSChicago.com highlights a concerning increase in cancer risk among firefighters. A new study has uncovered a strong connection between firefighting and higher cancer rates, raising serious questions about the long-term health impacts of the job.
The research, which involved nearly 15,000 firefighters, suggests that their exposure to hazardous substances during fires could significantly increase their chances of developing various types of cancer. This study is part of a larger effort that included over 30,000 firefighters from Chicago, San Francisco, and Philadelphia, spanning nearly six decades. The findings may lead to major changes in safety protocols and protective measures for those in the profession.
According to Tom Ryan, president of the Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2, “Our cancer levels will be higher than the average person.†The data shows that Chicago firefighters are two and a half times more likely to develop mesothelioma, a rare cancer often linked to asbestos exposure. They also face higher risks of digestive and respiratory cancers, as well as kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers at younger ages than the general population.
Experts believe that the chemicals released when modern materials burn—such as plastics and synthetic fabrics—are being inhaled or absorbed through the skin, even after the fire is extinguished. This makes it crucial for firefighters to take extra precautions both at the scene and after returning to the station.
A companion study recommends that firefighters keep their gear outside the truck after a fire and store it in a separate, well-ventilated area at the station. It also emphasizes the importance of showering immediately after a call to reduce chemical exposure.
More than 30 types of cancer were examined in this research, and the results have sparked significant concern within the fire service community. A second phase of the study is expected later this year, which should provide deeper insights into how specific chemical exposures contribute to different cancers.
This growing body of evidence underscores the urgent need for better protective measures and ongoing research to safeguard the health of those who put their lives on the line every day.
Thanks, Dan.
