On Wednesday, September 2, 2020, before 1:00 PM, Winnetka police and fire departments responded to a reported house fire at 614 Pine Lane. Battalion 28 arrived first on the small, dead-end street and observed flames coming from the C-sector of the structure. The alarm was quickly upgraded to a working fire, prompting additional resources to be dispatched. Due to the narrow, one-lane road, maneuvering firefighting apparatus was challenging. Glencoe Engine 30 stretched 400 feet of 5-inch hose to a hydrant on a cross street and then supplied Winnetka Engine 28 with another 400 feet of hose. Multiple lines were deployed into the home as crews tackled heavy fire in the attic. Additional lines were also set up around the exterior of the building.
Approximately 20 minutes into the incident, the alarm was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm. Flames broke through the roof in at least three locations. In addition to interior attack lines, a cellar nozzle was inserted through an opening in the roof and later repositioned to a second area. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control without it spreading much beyond the attic spaces. Later, two more engines were requested to assist with manpower.
The scene saw a significant response, with engine companies from Winnetka, Glencoe, Wilmetka, Northfield, Evanston, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Deerfield, and Wheeling. Truck companies from Winnetka, Glenview, and Skokie also arrived. Additional units included Morton Grove Squad 4, Northbrook Ambulance 11, and Wilmette Ambulance 27. One firefighter was evaluated by the ambulance crew on-site. Chief officers from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Northfield were present at the scene.
The residence is the official home of the Indonesian Consulate General. The fire caused considerable damage, but no injuries were reported. Local residents were advised to stay indoors due to heavy smoke. Emergency responders worked diligently to contain the blaze and ensure the safety of all involved.
