Elmhurst added to the site

The Elmhurst Fire Department within MABAS Division 12 has been added to our website. Dennis McGuire, Jr. generously provided the images. Recently, Elmhurst transitioned from their classic white-over-school-bus-yellow scheme with green trim to a more traditional white-over-red color palette. Additionally, they swapped out their E-ONE apparatus for new Pierce vehicles. While EMS units are operated by contracted personnel, the fire suppression units are manned by full-time career firefighters. I had the chance to capture some photos of their updated fleet. The images include their Medic 1, Engine 1, Engine 3, and their impressive Mobile Command and Communications Center. Dennis McGuire, Jr. took these fantastic shots, providing us with a clear view of their modernized equipment. It’s worth noting that Elmhurst previously featured an eclectic mix of apparatus including American LaFrance, Pierce, Mack, and Darley engines. Their older aerials were both 100-foot rear-mounted models from Pirsch. For those interested in history, I’ve included a few vintage photos as well. One shows a 1974 Hendrickson 1871S/Pierce Suburban engine with a 1,500-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. Another highlights a 1971 American LaFrance 1000 Series engine equipped with a 1,250-GPM pump and 500 gallons of water. There’s also a shot of their Truck 1, which started life as a 1978 Mack CF/Pirsch model that was refurbished in 1992 by RPI. This vehicle boasts a 100-foot rear-mount aerial with a 250-GPM PTO pump and 150 gallons of water. Lastly, there’s a photo of their former Truck 2, a 1981 Pirsch aerial ladder that was similarly refurbished by RPI in 1992. These changes mark significant updates for the department, reflecting both modernization and a nod to their storied past. It’s always fascinating to see how departments evolve over time, balancing tradition with innovation.
