China News Service, Wuhan, April 8 (Reporter Xu Jinbo) – Cummins Fuel System (Wuhan) Co., Ltd. officially opened today in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Hubei Province. This marks the first overseas production base for fuel systems established by Cummins, one of the world’s leading engine manufacturers. The new facility highlights the company's growing commitment to the Chinese market and its long-term strategy to support local industry with advanced technology.
Huajin Sheng, Vice President of Cummins Inc. and President of East Asia, who attended the opening ceremony, emphasized that the company, based in Columbus, Indiana, has over 80 years of experience in fuel system development and manufacturing. As a Fortune 500 company, Cummins operates through more than 550 distributors across 160 countries, reinforcing its global presence and influence in the automotive and industrial sectors.
Cummins has maintained strong ties with China for decades, dating back to the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, when its engines and trucks played a vital role in supporting China’s war efforts. In 1975, Erwin Miller, then Chairman of Cummins, made a historic visit to Beijing, becoming one of the first American business leaders to explore commercial opportunities in China. Following the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Cummins set up its first office in Beijing. Today, the company invests over $240 million in China and is the largest foreign investor in the Chinese diesel engine industry.
Cummins was among the first Western companies to localize engine production in China. To date, it has established 21 offices across the country, including a joint research and development center with Dongfeng, launched in August 2006. This R&D hub made Cummins the first foreign diesel engine company to establish a technical center in China.
The newly opened Wuhan Plant, which invested $10 million in its first phase, will produce key components such as common-rail fuel pumps, CELECT injectors, and fuel pumps. These products will support Cummins’ engine joint ventures in China, including Dongfeng Cummins and Xi’an Cummins, ensuring that domestic engines remain competitive in the market.
The Cummins Fuel System plant in Wuhan is the third major component company established by Cummins in China, following Cummins Turbo Systems (formerly Holcerth) and Cummins Filtration (formerly Fleetguard). Additionally, the Cummins Emissions Processing System Beijing plant is set to open this year. Once operational, Cummins will become the first foreign diesel engine manufacturer to introduce all key subsystem technologies—filtration, air intake processing, fuel systems, and post-treatment—into Chinese production.
This expansion underscores Cummins' strategic vision to strengthen its foothold in China and contribute to the country’s growing automotive and industrial sectors. With continued investment and innovation, the company aims to maintain its leadership in the global engine market while supporting sustainable development in China.
