Global Engine Manufacturing Giant Cummins Sets Up Factory in Wuhan

China News Service, Wuhan, April 8 — Cummins Fuel System (Wuhan) Co., Ltd. officially opened today in the Wuhan Economic and Technological Development Zone, Hubei Province. This marks the first overseas production base established by Cummins, one of the world’s leading engine manufacturers, outside the United States. The new facility is set to play a crucial role in supporting the company’s growing presence in the Chinese market. Huajin Sheng, Vice President of Cummins Inc. and President of East Asia, highlighted the company's long-standing expertise in fuel system development and manufacturing, with over 80 years of experience. Headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, Cummins is the world’s largest independent engine manufacturer and ranks among the Fortune 500 companies. With more than 550 distributors across 160 countries, the company has built a strong global footprint. Cummins has maintained a deep relationship with China for decades. Its engines and trucks were vital during the early stages of the Anti-Japanese War. In 1975, Erwin Miller, then chairman of Cummins, became one of the first American business leaders to visit China, paving the way for future collaboration. Following the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations, Cummins opened its Beijing office, marking the beginning of its long-term investment in the country. To date, Cummins has invested over $240 million in China, becoming the largest foreign investor in the diesel industry. It was also one of the first Western diesel companies to localize engine production in the country. The company now operates 21 offices across China, including an engine technology research and development center established in 2006 with Dongfeng Motor Corporation. This made Cummins the first foreign diesel engine company to set up an R&D center in China. The Wuhan plant, which received an initial investment of $10 million, will produce key components such as common-rail fuel pumps, CELECT injectors, and fuel pumps. These products will support Cummins’ joint ventures in China, including Dongfeng Cummins and Xi’an Cummins, ensuring that domestic engines remain competitive in the market. This new facility is the third key component company established by Cummins in China, following Cummins Turbo Systems (formerly Holcerth) and Cummins Filtration (formerly Fleetguard). Additionally, the Cummins Emissions Processing System Beijing plant is set to open this year. Once operational, Cummins will become the first foreign diesel engine manufacturer to introduce all major subsystem technologies—filtration, air intake processing, fuel systems, and post-treatment—into China’s production network. With these developments, Cummins continues to strengthen its position in the Chinese market, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, quality, and long-term partnerships.
