The Joliet Fire Department is currently in the process of building a new fire station for Station 3. The project, which has already broken ground on Laraway Road, is expected to cost $1.6 million, with $1.1 million coming from a federal grant. Once completed, the new facility will replace the existing station located at 319 Grove Road.
A recent photo shows the current structure, which is set to be replaced by a modern, more functional building. The new station will include separate locker rooms and bathrooms for women, a feature that the current station lacks. While there are no female firefighters in Joliet at the moment, Fire Chief Joe Formhals believes this is about to change.
“We’re going to get a woman on, it’s just a matter of when,†Formhals said. “You have to anticipate that. I don’t think we’re going to get 50 women all at once, but it will add a new dimension.â€
Currently, only four or five women are on the city’s eligibility list for firefighter positions, which hasn’t been updated in years due to a hiring freeze. However, Formhals hopes to update the list and begin hiring again in 2012. He also mentioned that requiring a paramedic certificate could help attract more women, as more women are enrolling in paramedic training programs.
A rendering of the new station gives a glimpse of what's to come. The design includes modern facilities and improved spaces for both male and female personnel. This move reflects the department’s commitment to inclusivity and preparing for a more diverse future.
