The Burlington Rescue Squad has made the difficult decision to dissolve by the end of this year. This move comes after struggling to keep pace with a growing number of emergency calls and a significant drop in volunteer participation. Once dissolved, the City of Burlington Fire Department will take over all rescue services for city residents. Meanwhile, officials from the Town of Burlington are currently in talks with the city about potentially outsourcing their emergency medical services (EMS) starting January 1st. Both towns already operate their own fire departments, but the city plans to expand its workforce by hiring three more full-time and two additional part-time fire/EMS personnel. This will bring the total paid staff to five full-time, 12 part-time fire/EMS members, and one part-time administrative assistant. The city fire department will also continue to rely on its volunteer firefighters.
As for the Town of Burlington, it seems increasingly likely they'll sign a contract with the city for rescue services. Currently, there are around 20 members on the rescue squad's active roster, and it's expected that some of them will transition to volunteering with the city fire department or other local volunteer organizations.
This volunteer squad, established back in 1946 under the auspices of the Burlington Rotary Club, has responded to between 1,300 and 1,600 calls per year in recent years. At its peak, it even provided coverage for parts of Dover, along with Kenosha and Walworth Counties. However, the board concluded that maintaining operations wasn't sustainable moving forward. In April, the squad and the city fire department announced they were exploring a potential merger. For a while, there was talk of scaling back their responsibilities to focus solely on serving the town, but that idea was ultimately deemed unworkable.
In preparation for the dissolution, some of the rescue squad's equipment will be donated to both the city and town fire departments, while the remainder will go to departments in need across the state.
