The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a reported dryer fire this morning at 226 S. Fletcher Drive in their community. Upon arrival, first units observed light smoke coming from the structure. As they surveyed the home, they discovered an active fire inside. Battalion Chief 24 escalated the alarm to a Code 4, calling for assistance from Buffalo Grove (Tower 25), Arlington Heights (Engine 4), and Long Grove (Ambulance 55).
As the first engine company stretched a hose line and prepared to enter the 50×25 ranch-style house, the fire suddenly flashed over. Crews quickly extinguished the main fire within minutes and then worked on cooling down hot spots and performing overhaul. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.

The firefighters had to navigate through about 20 inches of snow left from last week’s blizzard, which made access and movement more challenging. The house was nearly hidden by thick black smoke before water was applied to the fire. As the first line entered through the front door, heavy flames were visible coming from the living room window.
A flashover occurred just as crews were preparing to make entry, highlighting the intensity of the fire. Despite the difficult conditions, the team managed to bring the blaze under control within 10 minutes. According to Battalion Chief Dave Palmeri, the heat from the fire caused most of the house to auto-ignite within five to seven minutes before crews arrived.
