Apartment fire in Wheeling, 12-19-23 (more)

From the PHFD (Prospect Heights Fire Department) team stationed on the fourth floor: The firefighters did an outstanding job tackling the structure fire in Wheeling. The lead-out from the standpipe required all three 75-foot sections of 2-inch hose to reach the affected unit. It's worth noting that both Wheeling and Prospect Heights use the same 2-inch Denver Load Packs. Great work by Engine 39 for applying water from the exterior using a 2 1/2-inch line before Engine 23 could get their 2-inch line operational. This external attack greatly assisted Engine 23 in deploying their own line. Engine 23 reported a pressure of 140 psi at the gauge. I also heard that there was significant spalling of the precast concrete ceiling and floor within the fire unit. Attached are some photos provided by the Prospect Heights Fire District showing the situation during and after the incident. [Image description: A view of the fire scene from outside the building. The structure shows visible damage, with firefighters still working to extinguish hotspots.] [Image description: Interior shots of the fire-damaged apartment. You can see charred walls and debris scattered around, indicating the intensity of the blaze.] [Image description: Firefighters conducting overhaul operations, ensuring no hidden embers remain. They are carefully inspecting the area to prevent reignition.] These images give a clearer picture of the extent of the fire and the efforts made by the firefighters to control it effectively. It’s crucial to acknowledge their dedication and skill in handling such challenging situations.
