From the PHFD BC team stationed on the fourth floor:
The response by the firefighters to the structure fire in Wheeling was nothing short of impressive. The Fire Attack Lead-Out utilized every inch of the three 75-foot sections of 2-inch hose connected to the standpipe to reach the affected unit. Both Wheeling and Prospect Heights use the same 2-inch Denver Load Packs, and it’s worth noting that E39 did an excellent job applying water from the exterior using a 2 1/2-inch line before Wheeling E23 even had their 2-inch line operational. This exterior attack made a significant difference, helping E23 get their line set up efficiently. According to reports, E23 maintained a pressure of 140 psi at the gauge.
Additionally, I’ve been informed that there was considerable spalling of the precast concrete ceiling and floor within the fire unit, which likely contributed to the challenges faced during the operation.

As someone who witnessed the event unfold, I can say that the coordination between the different units was remarkable. The initial attack by E39 set the tone for a well-executed operation, and the support provided by other teams ensured that the fire was brought under control swiftly. It’s always inspiring to see such teamwork in action, especially when lives and property are at stake.
