Chicago 4-11 Alarm Fire 12-29-12 (pt 4)

Saturday's fire at 2444 W. 21st Street was quite an event, with multiple alarms being called in. Here's what happened, pieced together from various sources: At 1:08 PM, Engine 23 responded to a report of rubbish near 2500 W. Cullerton Street but were directed to the main fire alarm at 2444 W. 21st Street. By this time, other units were already en route, including Engine 109, Truck 32, Truck 7, Battalion 4, Tower Ladder 5, and Squad 1. A Command Van, Battalion 14, and Ambulance 34 also joined the scene. By 1:13 PM, a Still & Box Alarm was declared by Battalion 4 due to heavy smoke visible on the second floor and several first-floor windows of a three-story building measuring approximately 200x100 feet. Additional units such as Engine 18, Engine 26, Truck 8, Ambulance 33, Battalion 15, Battalion 2, and a Paramedic Field Chief were dispatched. Things escalated quickly. At 1:20 PM, a 2-11 Alarm was called in after reports of heavy fire spreading through the entire three-story warehouse, which measured around 200x150 feet. The incident commander decided to go defensive, and Battalion 2 requested the CTA Pink Line to be shut down for safety reasons. More units arrived, including Engine 28, Engine 38, Engine 39, Engine 103, Truck 48, Tower Ladder 54, Truck 52, Battalion 12, Battalion 3, Battalion 19, Air Mask 6-4-4, Light Wagon 9-1-5, EMS Assistant Deputy Chief 4-4-11, and Special Operations Battalion 5-1-5. At 1:31 PM, there was a request for a reserve snorkel unit, with Engine 107 and Engine 35 responding along with 6-6-1. Just seven minutes later, at 1:38 PM, a 3-11 Alarm was declared, bringing in additional resources like Engine 8, Engine 65, Engine 99, Engine 44, Tower Ladder 10, and Tower Ladder 39. The situation continued to intensify, leading to a 4-11 Alarm and the activation of EMS Plan 1 and Level 1 HazMat protocols at 1:45 PM. Units like Engine 5, Engine 57, Engine 14, Engine 113, Haz Mat 5-1-1, Ambulance 45, Ambulance 19, Ambulance 88, Ambulance 44, Ambulance 21, Ambulance 53, and Paramedic Field Chief 4-5-4 were all mobilized. By 1:58 PM, two master streams from 2-7-1 and Battalion 4 were deployed on the west side of the building, though progress was slow. At 2:00 PM, EMS Plan 1 was fully operational. By 2:04 PM, 2-1-3 took command, and all officers switched to Channel 5 for command communication. By 2:30 PM, 11 master streams were actively working, with the gas company beginning excavation in Sector 1 to shut off the main supply line, and one line connected to the sprinkler system in Sector 4. The fire was finally brought under control around 3:46 PM when the 4-11 Alarm was officially struck out by 2-1-3. It's worth noting that apparatus marked with an underline indicates those that were actively involved in firefighting efforts, such as pumping water or extending ladders. Thanks to everyone who helped manage this challenging situation—Dave, Scott, and Bill, you all did an incredible job.
