Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

I just got this update from Jeff Rudolph: So I was at the scene earlier today when Fox Lake responded to a structure fire. It happened on April 8th, 2013, in the 38000 block of Hillandale Road within the unincorporated area of Spring Grove. Engine 223 from Fox Lake was first on the scene and found a single-story elevated house fully engulfed in flames. Command quickly called for support from Antioch and a tender unit from Spring Grove. They also pulled Box 22-14 to a second-alarm status for additional water tenders and chief officers. A special request went out for squad units from McHenry and Newport. The steep terrain and narrow, winding gravel roads made it extremely challenging for both firefighters and equipment. The tenders had to carefully navigate several blocks of these tricky roads to supply enough water. Initially, there were concerns that someone might still be inside the burning house, but thankfully those fears turned out to be false. The homeowner returned from a quick trip to the store to find firefighters hard at work trying to save his home. Crews worked tirelessly through the night to extinguish the blaze and thoroughly overhaul the site. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Here are some photos I took throughout the day. This first one shows a Fox Lake tender drafting water from a portable tank. You can see how the steep slope and limited access really complicated things. [Photo description: Fox Lake Tender 262 drafting from a portable tank] Next up is an image of an Antioch fire engine with its lines already deployed. These guys were working nonstop to get water on the fire as quickly as possible. [Photo description: Antioch fire engine with lines off] This next photo captures a Fox Lake firefighter calling for more hose to extend their reach. Every extra foot of hose could make a difference in situations like this. [Photo description: Fox Lake firefighter calling for additional hose] Here's another great shot showing Antioch firefighters manning a hose line. Their efforts were crucial in containing the spread of the flames. [Photo description: Antioch firefighters on a hose line] And here's one of Fox Lake's tender trucks. These vehicles played a vital role in supplying the massive amounts of water needed to fight such a large fire. [Photo description: One of Fox Lake’s tender trucks] From this angle, you can really see the challenge of accessing the burning house. The steep hillside and lack of direct pathways added to the difficulty of the operation. [Photo description: Rear view of the burning house showing limited access] Finally, this last photo captures the intense flames consuming the upper levels of the structure. It's a powerful reminder of why firefighters put themselves in harm's way every day. [Photo description: Heavy fire engulfing the upper level of the house] It was an exhausting but rewarding experience to witness everyone's hard work firsthand. The community should feel proud of their local fire departments for handling such a tough situation so effectively.
