On Sunday afternoon (June 2), members of Chicago's 6th Battalion found themselves in a challenging rescue scenario at the intersection of 53rd and Union. A tree trimmer was trapped, hanging upside down from a tree at a manageable height, but suffering from a broken leg. Truck 18 quickly positioned its ladder to provide initial support for the victim. Meanwhile, Squad 5 and Tower Ladder 39 were en route to assist. While Truck 18 held the victim's weight, the difficult and delicate process of freeing him began. It took some time to carefully untangle him from the tree.
Eventually, Tower Ladder 39 managed to maneuver its basket underneath, allowing the victim to be safely lowered to the ground. The whole operation lasted around 45 minutes. Access for TL39 was limited due to a nearby vacant lot that was extremely soft from the recent heavy rains. To stabilize the rig, they used fence posts that were being installed on the lot as temporary supports.
