A firefighter from Des Plaines, who works in the fire prevention division, noticed smoke coming from the roofline of a house located at 501 South Mount Prospect Road on Monday just before 2 PM. After talking to some people outside the residence, he contacted the RED Center to report the house fire. He then went inside the home to persuade two occupants to leave and later re-entered the building to conduct a secondary search.
The response to this working fire included resources from multiple departments. Three fire engines, two chief officers, and four Des Plaines ambulances were dispatched, along with a chief, a truck, and an ambulance from Mount Prospect, a chief and a truck from Prospect Heights, a Wheeling fire engine, and a Niles ladder truck. Interestingly, Des Plaines Battalion 61 and Truck 61 were both engaged in training at NIPSTA and responded directly from there.
When the suppression teams arrived, they found that the second-floor bathroom was suspected as the origin of the fire. However, by the time they arrived, the entire second-floor attic area of the split-level home was already fully involved in flames.
Attached are several photos taken by Larry Shapiro, providing a detailed look at the scene. These images capture various stages of the firefighting effort and highlight the significant impact of the blaze on the structure. The collaboration between different departments was crucial in managing this challenging situation effectively.
Despite the intensity of the fire, thanks to the quick actions of the first responder, everyone inside the home was safely evacuated without any injuries reported. This incident underscores the importance of having trained professionals ready to act swiftly in emergencies.
