Outdoor Grill Maintenance with PGS Legacy Grills

So you've bought a PGS Legacy Series grill and had a great summer of grilling for friends and family. You know that keeping your grill in top shape is essential, but you're not exactly sure how to go about it. The good news is that our outdoor gas grills are built to last and are easy to maintain. After all, the memories you make on the grill are worth preserving—so it’s important to keep your grill running smoothly.

If you neglect maintenance, your burners can get clogged, and grease and residue can build up, damaging the interior of your grill. Rust can also take a toll on your grill's appearance if left unchecked. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with some simple tips to help you care for your PGS Legacy grill properly.

Maintaining Your Gas Grill

Keeping your grill in great condition doesn’t have to be complicated. Just a little effort every now and then will go a long way. Experts suggest deep cleaning your grill once or twice a year, but we recommend doing a more frequent maintenance check every few months. Over time, marinades, vegetables, and grease can accumulate, so it’s a good idea to inspect your grill regularly.

It’s especially wise to give your grill a thorough cleaning right before the start of the grilling season. This helps ensure everything is in working order when you need it most.

Grease Tray

For your PGS Legacy grill, we recommend lining the grease tray with heavy-duty aluminum foil before each use. Regularly checking and emptying the tray is key to maintaining your grill's performance. Depending on what you cook, replace the foil every five to ten uses. If your grill has been exposed to rain without a cover, check the tray for water buildup.

Replacing the foil regularly will help extend the life of your grease tray and keep your grill running smoothly. Always make sure the foil is cool before replacing it.

Burners

Removing and cleaning the burners allows for a deeper clean of your grill. Before you begin, turn off the gas supply and make sure the feedline is completely empty of gas. Take your time and avoid rushing this process.

To remove the burner assembly, first take off the cooking grids and rock grates. Then gently lift the back of the burner. Cover the valve openings to prevent dirt from getting inside. Use a stiff wire brush to clean both sides and the bottom of the burner. For clogged flame holes, use a thin wire to clear them. A small bottle brush or flexible wire can help clean out the venturis on your grill.

Cooking Grids

Cleaning your cooking grids is straightforward. It’s best to scrub them with a brass or stainless steel brush before and after cooking while the grill is still hot. Use a barbecue mitt to protect your hands from the heat. If there's a lot of buildup, you can remove the grids and wash them with a soap solution.

Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before putting them back on the grill.

Stainless Steel Maintenance

Our PGS Legacy grills are made in California and are perfect for any outdoor space. Stainless steel grills are known for their durability and resistance to corrosion. However, even though they’re tough, they still require some care to maintain their appearance and longevity.

Neglecting regular maintenance can lead to surface damage and, in extreme cases, rust. Common issues include rust marks and pitting, which can occur from improper cleaning or exposure to harsh chemicals.

Rust Marks: These often come from steel particles like those found in wire wool or carbon steel utensils. Wipe them away immediately with a soft cloth and stainless steel cleaner to prevent staining.

Pitting: This can happen from bleach or strong food residues. Always use approved cleaners and rinse thoroughly after use. Avoid leaving salt or vinegar mixtures on the surface for too long.

Daily Care in a Nutshell

To keep your PGS Legacy grill looking its best, follow these simple steps:

  1. After each use, especially after cooking fatty meats, wipe down your grill with a damp cloth and rinse with warm water. This helps remove any leftover residue from the cooking process.
  2. Avoid using harsh abrasives or scouring pads on the stainless steel surfaces. They can scratch the finish and dull the look of your grill.
  3. When cleaning, always wash along the grain of the stainless steel, not across it.
  4. Dry your grill with a soft, dry towel to prevent water spots.
  5. Check for propane leaks by applying soapy water to the gas lines and connections. If bubbles form, there may be a leak that needs fixing.
  6. Always cover your grill when not in use. This protects it from the elements and keeps it looking new.

Regular cleaning is the key to keeping your PGS Legacy grill in top condition. Beyond the detailed steps above, just wiping it down after each use can make a big difference.
