From Drew Smith:
In 1994, the Spartan/S&S Tanker was declared beyond repair during its routine maintenance check. It was discovered that the oak planks used for mounting the tank frame to the chassis frame were cracked due to structural stress. The vehicle was sent over to Alexis Fire Equipment for repairs. Once the tank was removed for inspection, it became clear that the problem was far more extensive than anticipated. Both the chassis frame rails and the tank frame rails showed significant signs of corrosion. Repairing just the tank, which also included the body, was estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars. However, the condition of the chassis made any attempt at restoration impractical. The top of the frame rails had pitting that ran the entire length, while the sides exhibited deep corrosion, especially near the suspension mounts where the pitting was deeper than half the thickness of the frame material. Striking these corroded areas with a welding hammer caused them to weaken even further.
Below are images from Prospect Heights Fire District showing the extent of the damage:

The situation was dire enough that the decision was made to retire the vehicle entirely. This incident highlights the importance of regular maintenance checks and the challenges faced when restoring older firefighting equipment. It’s a stark reminder of how corrosion can compromise safety and functionality, making it imperative to address such issues proactively before they escalate.
The photos provided by the Prospect Heights Fire District clearly depict the severity of the corrosion, leaving no doubt about why the tanker was deemed irreparable.
