From Drew Smith:
The 1994 Spartan/S&S Tanker has been deemed beyond repair. During its routine annual inspection, technicians noticed significant cracking in the oak planks that connect the tank frame to the chassis frame. Concerned about the structural integrity, the vehicle was sent to Alexis Fire Equipment for repairs. Once the tank was removed, it became apparent that the damage extended far beyond just the oak planks. Both the chassis frame rails and the tank frame rails were severely corroded. Repairing the tank itself, which included the body, would have cost tens of thousands of dollars. However, the condition of the chassis made it impossible to fix. The frame rails showed extensive pitting—on top, the corrosion ran the entire length, while on the sides, it was particularly deep near the suspension mounts, surpassing half the thickness of the frame in certain spots. When tapped with a welding hammer, some areas even worsened, indicating the metal had weakened significantly.
[Attached are several photos from the Prospect Heights Fire District showing the extent of the corrosion.]
It’s unfortunate, but the decision was made to retire the tanker due to its deteriorated state. We’re currently evaluating options for replacing it with a more reliable vehicle. If you have any insights or suggestions, feel free to reach out.
Best regards,
Drew Smith
