Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22

Late Monday afternoon, emergency responders from the Buffalo Grove Fire Department and local police were dispatched to 1011 Aspen Drive following a report of a worker trapped in a hole in the front yard. It appeared that workers had been digging to address a residential sewer line issue when one of them became trapped in the hole due to a sudden ground collapse. Upon arrival, firefighters found other workers frantically trying to free their colleague. The severity of the situation quickly escalated, prompting the activation of the entire MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team. Firefighters from Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces to initiate a complex rescue operation. Early reports suggested that the trapped worker was unconscious and not breathing. Specialized technical rescue team members from neighboring towns such as Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett were urgently called in to assist. Additionally, the Buffalo Grove Mobile Communication Unit was deployed to ensure effective coordination during the operation. A request was also made for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vacuum truck, but the rescue was successfully completed before it arrived on scene. Tragically, despite the efforts of all involved, the victim did not survive. The body was eventually transported from the scene by an ambulance from Mundelein. Attached are several images taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing moments from the intense rescue operation.
