Trench rescue in Buffalo Grove, 12-12-22

Late Monday afternoon, emergency responders from the Buffalo Grove Fire Department and local police units were dispatched to 1011 Aspen Drive following a report of a worker trapped in a hole in the front yard. According to initial reports, workers had been digging to address a residential sewer line issue when one of them became trapped after the ground collapsed. Upon arrival, firefighters found the situation tense, with other workers frantically trying to dig out their trapped colleague. Recognizing the severity of the incident, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department quickly requested support from the MABAS Division 1 Technical Rescue Team. Responders from neighboring communities such as Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and additional teams from Palatine, Mount Prospect, Des Plaines, Rolling Meadows, Wheeling, Schaumburg, Elk Grove Village, Inverness, and Bartlett were mobilized. The Buffalo Grove Mobile Command Center was also deployed to assist in coordinating the complex rescue effort. Initial assessments indicated that the trapped worker was unconscious and not breathing, which heightened the urgency of the situation. While waiting for specialized equipment and reinforcements, a call was placed for an Arlington Heights Public Works sewer vac truck, though the rescue operation was successfully concluded before it arrived. Tragically, the victim did not survive the ordeal. Following the extraction efforts, the deceased was transported away from the scene by an ambulance from Mundelein. Attached are several images taken by Larry Shapiro, providing a visual account of the rescue operation. The photos capture the intense efforts made by first responders as they worked tirelessly to save the trapped individual. --- As I reflect on this event, it serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks faced by those working in construction and utility-related fields. The quick response and coordination among various departments were commendable, yet the outcome remains deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the family and friends of the worker who lost their life, as well as the first responders who put themselves in harm's way to help others.
