Wheeling (IL) house fire 2-12-11

The Wheeling Fire Department responded to a reported dryer fire this morning at 226 S. Fletcher Drive. Upon arrival, units spotted light smoke and quickly discovered an active fire inside the home. Battalion Chief 24 escalated the alarm to Code 4, calling for assistance from Buffalo Grove (Tower 25), Arlington Heights (Engine 4), and Long Grove (Ambulance 55). As the first engine company prepared to enter the 50x25 ranch-style house, a flashover occurred. Despite the sudden intensity, crews swiftly brought the fire under control within minutes and then conducted overhaul to ensure all hot spots were extinguished. Fortunately, no one was injured. Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, arrived on the scene shortly after the first units and captured several powerful images of the incident. The conditions were challenging—firefighters had to navigate through more than two feet of snow left from last week’s blizzard. One image shows thick black smoke engulfing the house before water was applied. Another captures the moment a flashover happened as firefighters moved in through the front door. A complete photo gallery is available here. The Daily Herald also covered the event, quoting Battalion Chief Dave Palmeri: "In the five to seven minutes before crews arrived, the heat caused most of the house to 'auto-ignite.' Firefighters had the blaze under control within 10 minutes." This fast response highlights the professionalism and quick action of the Wheeling Fire Department, ensuring the safety of the community and minimizing property damage.
