Braceville is added to MABAS Division 15

The Braceville Fire Department serves a 1.5-square-mile area in Grundy County, Illinois. The department is staffed entirely by 17 dedicated volunteers who respond to both fire and emergency medical services (EMS) calls. They operate from a single fire station and maintain a fleet of essential equipment, including two fire engines, one aerial ladder truck, a brush unit, an ambulance, and a Chevy Suburban. Notably, the ambulance and one of the fire engines were previously owned by the Braidwood Fire Department, giving them a shared history with neighboring departments. The aerial truck, which stands out as a key piece of equipment, was acquired from the Lyondell/Equistar facility. It's a 1979 Seagrave chassis with a tandem axle design, featuring a 54-foot Squrt ladder and custom bodywork by Pierce. This truck is equipped with 500 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam, making it well-suited for a variety of incidents. One of the fire engines, known as the X-Braidwood unit, was built in 1982 by Alexis on a Hendrickson 1871-C chassis. The "C" in the model designation indicates a contour cab, while Hendrickson also offered a square cab version at the time. This engine is soon to be replaced with a brand-new Spartan Metro Star Darley pumper in December. The new unit will feature a powerful light tower and a full set of Genesis Rescue tools mounted at the front bumper and rear of the truck, enhancing their response capabilities significantly. These updates reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to modernization and public safety. Special thanks go to Karl Klotz for providing the images and detailed information about the department’s equipment and history.
