Rümi's monthly volunteer shifts at the Women in Need Society (WINS) are highly sought after by Rümineers. These 3-hour sessions offer a unique opportunity to connect with colleagues and support a cause that is deeply relevant to our community. Every month, these slots fill up quickly, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of our team.
Community investment has always been central to Rümi’s mission. In 2022, we chose WINS as a key partner for our ügive program, aligning with our core values of Caring, Collaboration, Agility, Integrity, and Safety. Our goal is to help people build their "happy place," and WINS has played a vital role in that journey.
WINS provides critical resources, programs, and services to women and families facing hardship in Calgary. Through their thrift stores, educational initiatives, and support services, they empower individuals to regain independence and stability. When Rümi and WINS join forces, the impact is powerful — and it’s clear to see.
As part of our commitment to both our partners and our employees, Rümineers are given one full workday or two half-days per year to volunteer. In 2023, Rümineers and some ATCO colleagues contributed over 93 hours of service to WINS. That effort translated into sorting nearly 3.5 tons of clothing — valued at $24,000. A truly impressive achievement.
Kevan Eldridge, WINS Fund Development Coordinator, shared how much this meant: “We couldn’t have done what we did last year without the help of our volunteers, especially those like Rümi.†With rising inflation and an increase in people seeking support in Calgary, WINS faced unprecedented demand. The dedication of volunteers like Rümi made it possible to meet that need.
In 2022, WINS provided $560,000 worth of support through its house-to-home program. By July 2023, they had already surpassed $500,000 — nearly doubling their efforts. As Kevan explained, this was a huge shift, and without extra support, WINS wouldn’t have been able to keep up.
“Rümi’s support goes beyond just gratitude. When Rümineers come to our facilities and see the real impact of their work — the millions of dollars given away and the millions of pounds of goods saved from landfills — they understand it’s their contributions that make our work possible,†Kevan said.
For Rümineers, no thanks is needed. From volunteering together to organizing donation drives and seeing the results of their efforts, partnering with WINS has been a meaningful experience. At Rümi, living our values every day is important, and supporting WINS in helping women when they need it most is something we’re proud of.
As National Volunteer Week approaches, it’s a time to reflect on the power of collaboration. Organizations like Rümi and WINS show what can be achieved when we work together toward a common goal. We’re honored to be part of WINS’ journey and excited about the future of our partnership.
Thank you to all Rümineers for embodying our value of caring, and to WINS for their incredible work in improving the lives of so many in our community.
