The Braceville Fire Department serves a 1.5-square-mile area in Grundy County, Illinois. The department is staffed entirely by 17 dedicated volunteers who respond to both fire and emergency medical services (EMS) calls. Their fleet includes two fire engines, one aerial ladder truck, a brush rig, an ambulance, and a Chevy Suburban. Notably, the ambulance and one of the engines were previously operated by the Braidwood Fire Department before being acquired by Braceville. The aerial unit, a 1979 Seagrave chassis with a 54-foot Squrt body built by Pierce, was originally from the Lyondell/Equistar facility. This truck is equipped with 500 gallons of water and 500 gallons of foam, making it well-suited for both structure and wildland fires.
One of the engines, an Alexis model built in 1982 on a Hendrickson 1871-C chassis, features a contour cab (C design), which was a popular option at the time. A square cab (S design) was also available from Hendrickson during that era. This engine is set to be replaced in December by a brand-new Spartan Metro Star Darley pumper. The new unit will come equipped with a powerful light tower and a full set of Genesis Rescue tools mounted on the front bumper and rear of the vehicle, significantly enhancing their rescue capabilities.
Photos provided by Karl Klotz capture the current fleet, including the historic Hendrickson Alexis engine, the Seagrave Pierce Squrt, and the upcoming Spartan Metro Star Darley pumper. These images offer a glimpse into the department’s ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade their equipment to better serve their community.
