Trial for Cicero arson suspects from 2010 fire (update)

The Chicago Tribune recently published an updated report on the murder trial of Lawrence Myers, who was found guilty in connection with a deadly fire that occurred in Cicero in 2010. The incident, which took place on Valentine’s Day, resulted in the tragic deaths of seven people, including four children. Lawrence Myers, 64, was convicted by a jury for his role in orchestrating the fire at a four-flat apartment building located at 3034 S. 48th Court. Prosecutors allege that Myers wanted to burn down the property to collect $250,000 in insurance money and relocate to West Virginia. To carry out the plan, he hired his maintenance man, Marion “Andre” Comier, 51, who is still facing murder charges in the case. According to court documents, Comier set the fire using gasoline on a back porch, which quickly spread throughout the building. The only staircase leading to the second floor became blocked by flames, trapping several tenants inside. The victims included Byron Reed, 20, Sallie Gist, 19, and their young sons Rayshawn Reed, 3, and Brian Reed, who was just three days old. Also killed were Sallie Gist’s twins, Elijah and Elisha Gist, both 16, and family friend Tiera Davidson, 18. All died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation. The jury reached its verdict in less than 90 minutes, convicting Myers of seven counts of murder—one for each victim. Authorities revealed that two days after the fire, three individuals came forward to Cicero police, claiming they had overheard Myers and Comier discussing plans to burn down the building. Cicero Police Detective Joseph Melone stated that investigators uncovered evidence showing that Myers and Comier had conspired to set the fire for financial gain. A key part of the investigation involved a cooperating witness who wore a wire and recorded multiple conversations between the two men. In one of the recordings, Myers expressed regret about the timing of the fire, saying it happened when many people were home. He also complained that Comier didn’t follow his instructions, telling him, “I told him to do it in the afternoon before the kids came home from school.” Myers allegedly promised Comier $3,000 and insisted he not harm anyone. After the fire, Myers filed an insurance claim for the damaged property. Shortly after his arrest, he confessed to detectives, citing his financial struggles as the main motivation behind the crime. Myers is scheduled to be sentenced on December 16, and he faces a mandatory life sentence for his role in the tragedy. Thanks, Dan.
