Developed by Sinopec Engineering Construction Company's Gaoqiao Branch, Tianjin University, and Shenzhen Chengda Technology Co., Ltd., China's largest single-capacity lubricant-type atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit—Sinopec Gaoqiao Branch's 8 million tons per year lubricating oil type facility—has recently completed a full start-stop cycle after three years of continuous operation. Following comprehensive evaluation and calibration, the unit has successfully met all expected performance targets, including processing capacity, product yield, quality standards, and energy efficiency.
Last month, the entire engineering technology development project passed a technical review organized by the Sinopec Science and Technology Development Department. Experts from the industry acknowledged that the integrated technology has reached international advanced levels and is ready for industrial application. This set of technologies can also be adapted for use in other types of atmospheric and vacuum distillation units, offering broad potential for future deployment.
During the development of this comprehensive technology, several innovative methods were introduced and integrated. These include large-scale vacuum systems, vacuum fractionation systems, oil transfer pipelines, and heating furnaces. Key advancements involved the development of large-scale steam-mechanical combined vacuum systems, the creation and experimental research of a cold-state simulation device for super-large liquid distributors, and the design and application of large-scale critical piping systems—all of which represent groundbreaking domestic innovations and have been applied for the first time.
Compared to fuel-type units, the lubricant-type atmospheric and vacuum distillation system presents more complex challenges. The process of producing lubricating oil distillate from vacuum oil is significantly more technically demanding than producing cracking feedstock, requiring higher precision and control. Despite its complexity, most of the engineering techniques developed for this unit are also applicable to fuel-type vacuum distillation systems, offering valuable cross-industry benefits.
This achievement marks a significant milestone in China’s refining technology, demonstrating the country’s growing capability to develop and implement high-level, large-scale petrochemical engineering solutions.
