In recent years, the import volume of Chinese rubber belt products has been steadily rising. Under the Cooper Standard Auto Parts Business Unit of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., the company sees significant potential in the Chinese market. Although Cooper already operates a joint venture in China, the business unit is focusing on two key product areas—infusion hoses and noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) components—to make a meaningful impact.
According to Allen Campbell, deputy manager overseeing Asian operations, the demand for these specific parts in China is growing rapidly. This has prompted Cooper to consider establishing local production facilities to meet the increasing needs. The company is actively seeking partners and evaluating options between joint ventures and sole proprietorships.
Cooper believes that relocating part of its production to China offers a strategic advantage, combining both offensive and defensive approaches. The "offensive" strategy involves serving the expanding domestic market, while the "defensive" approach allows for exporting certain products back to the U.S. and other international markets.
As part of this plan, Cooper Auto Parts is considering setting up a wholly-owned subsidiary near Chongqing Ford Motor Co., Ltd., to manufacture infusion hoses that are currently imported from India. Campbell emphasized the company's long-term vision: “We are not just focused on the U.S. and European markets anymore. We are committed to growing our presence and capturing more opportunities in China.â€
