At the end of the year, ships entering and leaving Yangshan Deepwater Port will no longer have to wait in line. According to the Shanghai Port Group, the second phase of the Yangshan Deepwater Port is now fully operational, featuring four of the world’s most advanced "magic bridge cranes." These cranes arrived at the dock a few days ago, marking a major milestone for the port.
The first phase of the Yangshan Deepwater Port was launched at the end of last year, transforming the area into one of the busiest ports in Shanghai. By the end of August, the container throughput of Phase I reached 1.844 million TEUs, with an average daily volume of 7,588 TEUs. In August alone, the port handled 300,000 TEUs, the highest monthly output since its establishment. Due to this high demand, ships often had to wait outside the port for hours, especially on busy days when berths were limited.
With the completion of the second phase, this waiting problem is set to be resolved. The second phase is a specialized container terminal located west of the first phase, stretching 1,400 meters along the shore and covering 700,000 square meters. It includes four deep-water berths capable of handling 2.5 million standard containers annually. Recently, the second phase land reclamation project passed quality inspections by the Shanghai Port Quality Supervision Station. The project involved filling 3.97 million cubic meters of soil over 430,000 square meters, taking 19 months to complete. It marks the first successful unit of the second phase.
According to reports, after the second phase is completed, the port will be equipped with 16 giant bridge cranes and 60 field tire cranes. Among them, 13 are the latest "double 40 feet" bridge cranes made by Zhenhua Port Machinery. These cranes, known as the “strongest man†in the industry, can lift four 20-ton containers at once, significantly boosting efficiency. Compared to traditional cranes, their loading and unloading speed has increased by more than 60%. Four of these cranes have already been transported to the second phase terminal, with the rest expected to arrive in the coming month.
According to the manager of Shengdong Company, which operates the Yangshan Terminal, the current water-to-water transfer ratio has reached 35%, far below the target of 50% or more. As a key international shipping hub, achieving this ratio is crucial. Once the second phase is fully operational, Yangshan Port will boast nearly 3,000 meters of coastline, 9 deep-water berths, and 34 large bridge cranes. This expansion will not only support more direct flights but also boost transit container operations. Shanghai Port Group has announced that the South American route will be moved to Yangshan in October, and the U.S. East Coast route will follow in early 2025, maximizing the port's "cluster effect."
