The second phase of Yangshan Port has taken shape

At the end of the year, ships entering and leaving Yangshan Deepwater Port will no longer have to "queue" for berths. According to the Shanghai Port Group, the second phase of the port has now been completed, featuring four of the world's most advanced "magic bridge cranes." These cranes arrived at the dock just a few days ago, signaling a major upgrade in port operations. The first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port was launched at the end of last year, making it one of the busiest ports in Shanghai. By the end of August, the container throughput of Phase I reached 1.844 million TEUs, with an average daily volume of 7,588 TEUs. In August alone, the port handled 300,000 TEUs, marking its highest monthly output since its establishment. Due to this heavy traffic, ships often had to wait outside the port for hours, especially on certain days of the week, simply because there were no available berths. With the completion of the second phase, this waiting problem is set to be resolved. The second phase is a dedicated container terminal located west of the first phase. It features a 1,400-meter-long terminal line, connected to the first phase, and covers about 700,000 square meters of land. Four deep-water berths have been constructed, with an annual handling capacity of 2.5 million standard containers. Recently, the second phase’s land reclamation project passed quality inspection by the Shanghai Port Quality Supervision Station. The project involved filling 3.97 million cubic meters of earth over 430,000 square meters, taking 19 months to complete. This was the first unit project of the second phase to pass appraisal. According to reports, the second phase will be equipped with 16 giant bridge cranes and 60 tire cranes. Among them, 13 bridge cranes are the latest "double 40 feet" models developed independently by Zhenhua Port Machinery. Known as the "most powerful strong man," these cranes can lift four 20-ton containers—each weighing 40 tons—at once. Compared to traditional cranes, their loading and unloading efficiency is more than 60% higher. Four of these "magic cranes" have already arrived at the second-phase terminal, with the rest expected to be installed within the next month. According to the person in charge of Shengdong Company, which operates the Yangshan Terminal, the current "water-to-water transfer" ratio has reached 35%, far below the ultimate goal. As an international shipping hub, a water-to-water transfer rate of over 50% is considered normal. Once the second phase is fully operational, Yangshan Port will boast nearly 3,000 meters of coastline, nine deep-water berths, and 34 large bridge cranes. This expansion will not only support more direct flights but also enhance the port's ability to handle transit containers. In October this year, Shanghai Port Group plans to shift the South American route to Yangshan, and the U.S. East Coast route will follow in early 2024. This move aims to maximize the "cluster effect" of Yangshan Port, solidifying its position as a key player in global maritime trade.
